Etymology

From ქალაქი (kalaki, “city”) +‎ პეტი (ṗeṭi, “head, ruler”). See similar development in Old Armenian քաղաքապետ (kʻałakʻapet).

1. politarch, ruler, governor, mayor (of a city)
   • 900 CE – 1100, Bible, Acts 17.8:

     და აღტეხეს ერი იგი და ქალაქპეტნი იგი სიტყჳთა მით

     da aɣṭexes eri igi da kalakṗeṭni igi siṭq̇wita mit

     And they troubled the people and the rulers of the city, when they heard these things.

Usage notes

In the Bible translation, corresponds to Old Armenian քաղաքապետ (kʻałakʻapet) and Koine Greek πολιτάρχης (politárkhēs).
