Etymology

[edit]

Has been compared to Gothic 𐌺𐌰𐌻𐌱𐍉 (kalbō), from Proto-Germanic *kalbaz, itself of uncertain origins.[1]

Since the presence of Germans that far east should be met with hesitation, one may rather consider a relation with Akkadian 𒆏𒋢 (kabsu, young male sheep), Classical Syriac ܟܒܫܐ (keḇšā, wether).

These terms represent inter-Semitic and ultimately foreign borrowings: the final consonant of Hebrew כֶּבֶשׂ (kéḇeś, sheep), Phoenician 𐤊𐤁𐤔 (kbš, sheep) and Arabic كَبْش (kabš, ram, bellwether) shows irregular correspondence. This final consonant may be reconstructed as Proto-West Semitic (/ɬ/), the historic pronunciation of which was /ɬ/. In the Mingrelian word, Mingrelian (l) may go back to Proto-Kartvelian *lʿ, whose pronunciation was identical to this Proto-West Semitic consonant - contrast Svan (š), also going back to Proto-Kartvelian *lʿ.
