Etymology

From სქიდ- (skid-) +‎ -უნ (-un). Inherited from Proto-Kartvelian *šwed- : šwd- (“to remain”).

1. to live
   1. (human or animal) to live, to survive

      ლაზური ოჭარუ დიდო კოლაჲი დულჲა ვარრენ. ჰამ დულჲა ნაიქომანფე დიდო სქიდან.

      lazuri oç̌aru dido ǩolayi dulya varren. ham dulya naikomanpe dido skidan.

      Writing in Laz is not an easy task. Long live those who do it.

   2. (human or animal) to live in a place, to sustain life in a place

      ისრაილიზ ნასქიდუნ კოჩეფეში დიდოფე ჲახუდი რენ

      israiliz naskidun ǩoçepeşi didope yaxudi ren

      Most people living in Israel are Jews

   3. (people) to make a living with something

      ამეთი ჩაჲი დო ნთხირიშენ ნაეჭოფუმზ გენჭარეჲითე სქიდუნ

      ameti çayi do ntxirişen naeç̌opumz genç̌areyite skidun

      Amet lives on the money he receives from tea and hazelnuts

   4. (Vitse–Arkabi) (planted plant) to revive before it dries up, to flourish

      Synonyms: გონტუჲ (gonťuy), მზგუდუნ (mzgudun)

      ჩქუნი ლეტაზ ნეძი ვარსქიდუნ. არ ჟურ წანაზ დოსქიდუნ დო უკულე ეხომბუნ.

      çkuni leťaz neżi varskidun. ar jur ǯanaz doskidun do uǩule exombun.

      Walnuts don't live in our soil. They live for a year or two and then dry up.

   5. (Vitse–Arkabi) (grafted plant) to take root

      უშქური მცხულიზ გებომფონი დო კაი კაი სქიდუნ

      uşkuri mʒxuliz gebomponi do ǩai ǩai skidun

      I grafted the apple onto the pear. Its taking hold.

   6. (Sumla, Lome) (human or animal) to come back to life, to recover after terminal illness

      Synonyms: შური მოღამს (şuri moğams), მოიკარენ (moiǩaren)

      მუსთავა მარაზითე ღურუტუ. ნჭამეფე შუ დო ჰაწი თამო თამო სქიდუნ.

      mustava marazite ğuruťu. nç̌amepe şu do haǯi tamo tamo skidun.

      Mustava was dying of tuberculosis. He took medicine. Now he is slowly getting better.
