[edit]From Proto-Georgian-Zan root *s₁loḳ- (“to hiccup”) with the onomatopoeia suffix -ინ- (-in-). Cognates include Mingrelian შიკინი (šiḳini) and Laz შიკინი (şiǩini).
Due to its onomatopoeic origin, the phonetic resemblance can be found in other languages as well. (compare German Schluckauf, English hiccup as well as Proto-Indo-European *(s)leuk-).
