[edit]Etymology
[edit]From *კვილ-ი (*ǩvil-i), from Proto-Kartvelian *ḳwil-.[1][2] Cognate with Mingrelian კველა (ḳvela, “stool, seat”), Svan კუ̂ილ (ḳûil, “block of wood, tree stump; stool”), and possibly dialectal Georgian კვილო (ḳvilo, “small block of wood, tree stump”).
According to Klimov, from a Proto-Northeast Caucasian source.[3] Compare Tsez къуӏри (q’uʿri, “bench”), Hinukh къуре (q’ure), Dargwa уркьули (urq̇uli, “board”), for which Starostin reconstructs Proto-Northeast Caucasian *q̇wǝ̆lʔă.[4]
