Etymology

From გვ- (gv-) +‎ ა- (a-) +‎ ნჯოგ- (ncog-) +‎ -ენ (-en). Inherited from Proto-Kartvelian *ʒ₁ag- : ʒ₁g- (to poison). Cognate with Georgian ძაგ-ება (ʒag-eba), Mingrelian გო-ჯოგ-აფა (go-ǯog-apa) and Svan ლი-ჟგ-ენ-ი (li-žg-en-i).
