From ამა- (ama-) +‎ უ- (u-) +‎ ღ- (ğ-) +‎ -ამ (-am) +‎ -ს (-s). Inherited from Proto-Kartvelian *ɣw- (to take, take away (inanimate objects)). Cognate with Georgian ღება (ɣeba).
