[edit]From Middle Georgian ავაზა (avaza, “cheetah”), from Old Georgian ავაზაჲ (avazay), ავაზი (avazi, “leopard”). From Iranian, however, according to Hübschmann and Ačaṙyan, via Old Armenian յաւազ (yawaz); see there for more.
