Etymology

This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.
Particularly: “Not given etymology by STEDT (êɑȵ¹ thɑȵ² "guest"); the initial e is strikingly unusual for what is generally thought to be a native Burmese word. Luce gives Old Chinese (OC *lɯɡs, “different, strange”), Tibetan གྲོན་པ (gron pa, foreign guest) as cognates,[1] though these do not seem to be close phonetic matches.”
