[edit]From Middle Chinese 一 (MC 'jit, “one”). Cognate with Thai เอ็ด (èt), Lao ເອັດ (ʼet), Ahom 𑜒𑜢𑜄𑜫 (ʼit), Bouyei idt, Zhuang it, Tai Nüa ᥟᥥᥖᥱ (ʼět).
