[edit]အင်္ကျီ (angkyi, “clothes”) + တို (tui, “short”), from the Burmese association of Cantonese and Toisanese settlers with artisanship and manual work. Conversely, the Hokkien settlers were associated with the merchant trade, hence the name အင်္ကျီရှည် (angkyihrany).
