Believed to be from Pali haribhuñjeyya (literally consumable by Hari), from hari (Hari, a name of the Hindu god Viṣṇu) + bhuñjjeyya (consumable; edible). Cognate with Thai หริภุญชัย (hà-rí-pun-chai).
