Etymology

This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.
Particularly: “Not given etymology by STEDT (swai "slender and tapering"), and not mentioned by Luce 1981. Vague resemblance to both characters of Chinese 憔悴 (OC *zew zuds, “emaciated”), though nothing too striking. The "connect" sense is grouped etymologically with the "slender" sense by MED, though it is unclear if this is correct.”
