Burmese

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Old Burmese သိယ် (siy), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *səj (to die). Compare Chinese (), Dzongkha ཤི (shi).

The "stable" and "wine" senses are grouped with the "die" sense by MED, perhaps as "dying" is a form of "stability (no action)"; for a semantic parallel, compare English die down.
