[edit]From Proto-Sino-Tibetan origin. Cognate with Jingpho sàw (“dry”), Jingpho sàwng (“parched”), S'gaw Karen သး (thä, “famine”) and possibly Tibetan དྲོ་པོ (dro po, “warm”). Also compare with Chinese 焇 (xiāo, “to sun-shine, to dry”) and Chinese 燥 (“dry, parched”). The original meaning of "dry" can be seen in သယောင်း.
