Etymology

This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.
Particularly: “Not given etymology by STEDT (san. "clean"), and mentioned by Luce 1981. Bears vague resemblance to Old Chinese (OC *zeŋs, “to cleanse”). Based on the "pick out chaff" sense, it may be worth going through "cleaning agriculture" terms in other languages, such as Chinese, to find other candidates for cognacy outside of Burmese.”
