The "strong" sense is from Proto-Lolo-Burmese *zan¹ (strong, firm), from Proto-Tibeto-Burman *b-tsan (strong, firm, steadfast). Cognate with Tibetan བཙན་པོ (btsan po, violent, strong) (STEDT).

The "nail" sense (which MED implicitly does not separate from the "strong" sense) is from Proto-Tibeto-Burman *m-(t)syen (nail, claw), and cognate with Tibetan སེན (sen, nail) (STEDT).
