Etymology

Particularly: “Not given etymology by STEDT (lyoʼ "loose, slack; subside"). Luce gives the obsolete-in-modern-Sino-Xenic Old Chinese (OC *hlja, *ɦljaʔ, “to loosen, relax”) as a cognate.[1] This appears semantically and phonetically reasonable. Note also (OC *hlja, “to stretch out, relax; comfortable”), which is used frequently in modern Sinitic (though rare in Sino-Xenic), and which appears to be related to 紓.”
