Burmese

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Tibeto-Burman *s-r(i/u)ŋ (long, elongate), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *drjang (long). Cognate with Tibetan རིང (ring, long, distant) (STEDT); Luce gives Old Chinese (OC *sriŋ, “long, numerous”) as a cognate;[1] this appears phonetically and semantically sound, and may be the "Chinese comparandum S578" that STEDT mentions on its page for the Tibeto-Burman root.[2]
