Inherited from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-ma-y (“face, cheek, front, ahead, first”) (STEDT: hma "( affix, locative )"). Cognate with Mizo [Term?] (hmai, “face”); doublet of မေး (me:, “lower jaw”).
