Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Old Burmese မ္လိယ် (mliy), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *mlij,[1] *m-l(e/ə)j (earth, country, ground, mud, soil). Cognate with Akha [script needed] (, earth), Old Chinese (OC *l'els, “ground, earth”) (STEDT, Hill 2019). The traditional comparison with Old Chinese (OC *hliɡ, “room, dwelling”)[2] is phonetically unconvincing, based on Old Chinese reconstructions.
