[edit]From Proto-Karen *hmejᴬ (“lie down, sleep”), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *r/s-mwəj (“to sleep; to dream”). Cognate with Western Pwo မံၫ, Eastern Pwo မီ့ (mî), Western Kayah ꤥ꤬ꤗꤛꤢꤩ (òmye).
