ဗိုက်
Appearance
Burmese
[edit]
Etymology
[edit]According to STEDT, from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *d-puːk (“belly; vitals; hollow object; cave”), whence Old Chinese 腹 (OC *puɡ, “belly, abdomen”). However, the -uik final suggests a borrowing from Mon; as noted on the page for the Chinese term, similar words exist in Mon-Khmer, suggesting an areal relation or a very deep inheritance past the point of reconstructability.
