Etymology

From Proto-Tibeto-Burman *pʷum (egg; to sit on eggs, hatch; testicle), of unclear relation, if even related, to Proto-Tibeto-Burman *pʷu (egg, bird, round object) and Proto-Sino-Tibetan *pu (egg) (the latter whence Old Chinese (OC *pʰuw, “to hatch”)).[1] Cognate with Lahu [script needed] (phɛ⁵³, to hatch) (STEDT).
