[edit]From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *nup ~ nip (“to pinch, squeeze, press, oppress, submerge, sink into; west, low, soft”) (STEDT: hnip "crush, oppress"). Cognate with နိပ် (nip, “to decline, be suppressed”), Old Chinese 入 (OC *njub, “to enter, (of the sun etc.) to set”).
