From Wiktionary, the free dictionary

Burmese

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Borrowed from Hokkien 豆腐 (tāu‑hū). Doublet of တိုဖူး (tuihpu:).

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /tòhú/
  • Romanization: MLCTS: tuihu: • ALA-LC: tuihūʺ • BGN/PCGN: tohu: • Okell: touhù

Noun

[edit]

တိုဟူး (tuihu:)

  1. tofu; (specifically) chickpea bean curd

Usage notes

[edit]

တိုဟူး usually refers to chickpea tofu, a common delicacy in Burmese cuisine. ပဲပြား (pai:pra:) is used to describe tofu made from soy. This is in contrast to most, if not all, borrowings of the Sinitic term 豆腐 (dòufu) in other languages, which refer to soy tofu by default.
