Etymology

According to Wade (1896), ဖၣ် (hpà) derives from a noun meaning ‘combination, collection, association’. The marker တဖၣ် (ta hpà) is possibly a fossilized classifier phrase consisting of တ (ta, “one”) and ဖၣ် (hpà).
