[edit]From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *tsow-t (“to pierce, plant, erect; a thorn”). Cognate with Jingpho [script needed] (džu, “thorn; to prick with a thorn”), Old Chinese 鑽 (OC *ʔsoːn, *ʔsoːns, “to bore, perforate”) (STEDT).
