Burmese

Pronunciation

[edit]

Etymology 1

[edit]

From Proto-Lolo-Burmese *m-dzj(u/i)t (to tear, rip); cognate with Lahu [script needed] (jɨ̀ʔ, to tear something) (STEDT). Said root appears to be allofamically related to Proto-Tibeto-Burman *9d)ziːt ~ *(t)siːt (to split), the latter whence Tibetan ཟེད (zed, broken off, damaged, injured) and Jingpho [script needed] (šìt, to split lengthwise). Note also similarities with these roots to Old Chinese (OC *seː, *se, “to tear, shred, rip”).
