From Proto-Lolo-Burmese *s-ŋ(y)akᴴ (bird), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-ŋak (idem). Cognate with Old Chinese (OC *ŋɡleːɡ, “a kind of aquatic bird”) (Hill 2019), (OC *ŋaːɡ, “osprey”) (STEDT).
