Etymology

The "roof (ridge)" sense is cognate with Tibetan ཁང (khang, house, building) (Hill, 2019).

It is unclear whether the other senses are connected to the "roof" sense, though MED groups them together, perhaps via semantic development "roof" > "far edge" > "far away, scarce, best".
