Burmese

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Old Burmese က္လဉ်ဇော (klañjo). According to the Myanmar-English Dictionary, the word is derived either from Pali kataññutā (gratitude) or Sanskrit कृतज्ञता (kṛtajñatā, gratitude), though this is phonetically unlikely. Another theory by Luce compares the word to Old Chinese (OC *la, *laʔ, *las, “to acknowledge”).[1]
