[edit]Calque of Sanskrit बुद्ध (buddha, “Buddha; awakened”), from སངས (sangs, “purified; cleansed”) + རྒྱས (rgyas, “extended; fully grown; spread”), literally “the awakened-blossomed one”, meaning that the Buddha has awakened from the sleep of ignorance and spread his mind to all objects of knowledge.
