Etymology

Generally believed to be derived from locchava, locchāva, loccava, locava or locāva, corruptions of Sanskrit लोकचाक्षुस् (lokacākṣus, “eye of the world, i.e. one who opens the eyes of the world”). See འཇིག་རྟེན་མིག་གཅིག ('jig rten mig gcig, “translator [world-eye]”), a literal translation of the same Sanskrit term.
