Etymology

From Proto-Southwestern Tai *kʰɛːkᴰ (guest), from Middle Chinese (MC khaek, “guest”).[1] Cognate with Thai แขก (kɛ̀ɛk), ᦶᦃᧅᧈ (ẋaek¹), Shan ၶႅၵ်ႇ (khèk), Ahom 𑜁𑜢𑜀𑜫 (khik), Zhuang hek.
