[edit]From Old Chinese 鹹 (OC *ɡrɯːm, “salty”) or 鹽 (OC *ɡ·lam, *ɡ·lams, “salt, salty”). Cognate with Thai เค็ม (kem), Shan ၸဵမ်း (tsáem), Saek แค๊ม.
