Lao

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Literally: Suffer the sourness now, and you will taste the sweetness later; avoid laziness, and you will receive gold and silver. Another interpretation of the first phrase is that one must resist the temptation to eat a fruit not fully ripe which has a sour taste (e.g., a mango), so that when it is fully ripe he/she can enjoy its sweetness. Compare Thai อดเปรี้ยวไว้กินหวาน (òt-bprîao-wái-gin-wǎan)
