Inherited from Proto-Southwestern Tai *bɯːnꟲ⁴ (“ground, earth”) (Jonsson, 1991), from Middle Chinese 本 (MC pwonX, “origin, foundation”). Cognate with Thai พื้น (pʉ́ʉn), Lü ᦗᦹᧃᧉ (puen²), Shan ပိုၼ်ႉ (pṵ̂en), Ahom 𑜆𑜢𑜤𑜃𑜫 (pün).
