Etymology

From Proto-Tai *t.hajꟲ (to weep).[1]

Cognate with Isan ไห่ or ไห้, Lao ໄຫ້ (hai), Shan ႁႆႈ (hāi), Ahom 𑜑𑜩 (hay) or 𑜍𑜩 (ray), Zhuang daej and haej (dialectal).

Within Kra-Dai, compare Sui qngeec (to weep, to cry), Southern Kam ngees (to weep, to cry), Proto-Hlai *C-ŋiːʔ (whence ŋej³~ŋaj³ across the modern lects).

Compare also Proto-Austronesian *Caŋis (to cry, to weep).
