[edit]From Proto-Southwestern Tai *taj/aɰᴮ¹ (“to creep; to move like a worm”), from Proto-Tai *twajᴮ (“to crawl over”).[1]
Cognate with Northern Thai ᨲᩱ᩵, Lao ໄຕ່ (tai), Lü ᦺᦎᧈ (ṫay¹), Shan တႆႇ (tài), Tai Nüa ᥖᥭᥱ (tǎy), Ahom 𑜄𑜩 (tay), Zhuang laeh (dialectal).
