Etymology
[edit]Compound of โคม (koom, “lantern”) + ลอย (lɔɔi, “to float”), literally “floating lantern”.
The adjective originated from Punch, an English newspaper in the reign of King Chulalongkorn (1868–1910), of which the front page featured a lantern picture and which often presented jocular stories from the West.[1]
