From Proto-Southwestern Tai *mlɛːŋᴬ (“insect”) which /-l-/ is dropped, from Proto-Tai *m.leːŋᴬ (“insect”), which is either from Middle Chinese 螟蛉 (MC meng leng, “caterpillar”)^[1] or native Tai borrowed into Chinese.^[2]
