[edit]From Middle Khmer ស្មេ (sme), ស្មើ (smœ), ស្មើហ (smœha, “same; equal”), from Old Khmer ស្មេ (sme, idem), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *sməʔ, *sməh (“equal, alike”), ultimately from Sanskrit सम (sama, idem) or Pali sama (idem). Cognate with Lao ສະເໝີ (sa mœ̄), Lü ᦉᦵᦖᦲ (ṡṁoe), Khmer ស្មើ (smaə). Doublet of สม (sǒm) (etymology 1).
