From Proto-Tai *ʰmenꟲ (porcupine).[1]

Cognate with Lao ເໝັ້ນ (men), Northern Thai ᩉ᩠ᨾᩮ᩶ᩁ, Khün ᩉ᩠ᨾᩮ᩶ᩁ, ᦖᦲᧃᧉ (ṁiin²), Shan မဵၼ်ႈ (māen), and Ahom 𑜉𑜢𑜐𑜫 (miñ), Zhuang myaenj in duzmyaenj (porcupine) (dialectal).
