From Proto-Tai *mawᴬ (drunk). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨾᩮᩢᩣ, Lao ເມົາ (mao), ᦙᧁ (maw), Tai Dam ꪹꪣꪱ, Tai Dón ꪹꪝꪱ, Shan မဝ်း (máo), Tai Nüa ᥛᥝᥰ (mäw), Zhuang maeuz, Zuojiang Zhuang maeuz.
