Etymology
[edit]From corruption of มัญจา (“bed”), from Pali mañca (“bed; couch; sofa”), and perhaps influenced by เบญจ (“five”), corrupted form of ปัญจ (“five”), from Pali pañca (“five”). Compare Khmer បញ្ច (bɑñcɑɑ, “decorated stand supporting a box containing the ashes of a deceased person”).
