[edit]From Sanskrit आश्चर्य (āścarya, “astonishment; miracle; surprise”); probably via Angkorian Old Khmer ʼaścāryya (“marvel, wonder; marvellous, wondrous”). Cognate with Old Khmer iscāryya, isacāryya, isacaryya; Modern Khmer អស្ចារ្យ (ʼɑhcaa); Lao ອັດສະຈັນ (ʼat sa chan). Doublet of อัจฉริยะ (àt-chà-rí-yá).
