From Proto-Tai *ʰloːmᴬ.[1] Southwestern Tai varieties such as Thai [lua̯mᴬ¹] etc. abberrantly show reflexes of Proto-Tai *uəm.[2]

Cognate with Northern Thai ᩉᩖᩅ᩠ᨾ, Lao ຫຼວມ (lūam), ᦷᦜᧄ (l̇om), Shan လူမ် (lǔum), Ahom 𑜎𑜢𑜤𑜉𑜫 (lüm), Zhuang lom.
