From Austronesian Sampáy or Sambáy. Compare Old Khmer ស្បៃ (spai), ស្បាយ៑ (spāy) > Middle Khmer ស្បៃ (spai) > Khmer ស្បៃ (sbay), Malay sebai. Possibly related to Thai สะพาย (sà-paai).
