[edit]From Proto-Tai *salᴮ (“to tremble”).[1]
In Southwestern Tai, cognate with Lao ສັ່ນ (san) or ຊັ່ນ (san), Lü ᦶᦉᧃᧈ (ṡaen¹), Shan သၼ်ႇ (sàn), Ahom 𑜏𑜃𑜫 (san).
In Central Tai, cognate with Nong Zhuang saenq.[2]
In Northern Tai, cognate with Zhuang saenz.
In other Tai, cognate with Zuojiang Zhuang swnz (Chongzuo dialect)[3] or saenz (Ningming, Longzhou and Daxin dialect)[3] or taenz (Daxin dialect).[3]
